Alhamdulillah TMET has signed an agreement to purchase a community center building (1700 sqm) for the first Masjid in the District. It is located at 9 Napier Street, Parkside, Timaru on SH1. The total price is $425,000 (NZD) and has to be paid in full by 1 November 2019. We are a small community and humbly request financial support from the wider Muslim community in NZ and overseas.
PROJECT BACKGROUND

Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatuallahi wa Barakatuhu,
Alhamdulillah, recently we signed an agreement to purchase a building for the first Masjid and Muslim Community Centre in Timaru District. It is going to be only the sixth Masjid of the whole of the South Island. At the moment the nearest Masjid is at a distance of 1-hour drive. It is a vibrant city of South Island and has around 20 Muslim families or about 65 individuals (including men, women and children) living here and expected to grow more.
Timaru District is at a distance of two hours drive from Christchurch, and this place is located on State Highway 1 making it easy access for residents and the travellers. It is a community centre and built on two floors with a car parking of around 30 cars on site. The total land size is around 1700sqm, and building is constructed on 350sqm; which can comfortably accommodate 200 people. The address is 9 Napier Street, Parkside, Timaru.
Currently, we hire a hall to pray Jummah prayer and gather at some brothers’ place for some daily prayers. For Ramadan we hire a hall for Taraweeh and organise iftar on weekends only. One of the brothers also holds Quranic teaching class in his house once a week for children.
The building came on the market for sale earlier this year on tender basis and Alhamdulillah our tender was accepted on 15th of March 2019 for $425,000 (NZD). We have paid the 10% deposit on 1st May 2019 and the settlement date or full payment is due on 1st November 2019. We have formed a Charitable Trust to streamline the whole process, named ‘Timaru Muslim Educational Trust’ with registration number 2732832 under NZ Charitable Trusts Act 1957 with Registrar of Incorporated Societies New Zealand.
